Secure Your Outdoor Halloween Decorations for Under $5

The last few years I’ve really gotten into decorating my yard for the holidays. It all started when I came across the cutest DIY witches on instagram. I love Halloween and was so excited to try to make them! They turned out great and looked so cute out in my yard until we had our first stormy night. The little stakes I used to keep them in the ground didn’t hold up to the wind at all and the next morning my cute witches were on the ground…and some missing their hats or heads.

I knew they needed to be secured better and with something much longer than the little u-shaped metal stakes I was using. Then I remembered I had these metal fence posts that would be perfect for this! I actually got them with some fence sections to block off under my deck when my dog Poppy was a puppy – she was quite the digger! 🙂 I took the fences down eventually and was using a few of the posts to stake up tomatoes and zinnias in my garden.

I used them that year and every year since to keep my witches staked to the ground upright and secure in the spot I wanted them. The fence posts can be found in the garden section at Menards. They come in two different lengths and are both under $5! I’ve bought more since as I’ve added more decorations and have used them to secure things both in the grass and rock areas around my yard.

This year I used the posts to secure my skeleton. First figure out where you would like to place your decoration. Then use a hammer or mallet to pound it a few inches into the ground. Make sure you pound it in the ground far enough for it to be stable and secure. I like to have both sizes of fence posts available when I’m putting my decorations out because depending on the height of your skeleton, ghost or witch you may decide you want a shorter or longer post.

Once your fence post is in the ground stand up your decoration next to it and use zip ties to attach it to the post. For the skeleton I used three zip ties where it seemed like it needed them and then I clipped the ends off.

It worked great to secure my skeleton! It’s been standing there all season and I haven’t had to worry about it on the windy fall days. What do you put out in your yard for Halloween?
