What is Mexican Hot Chocolate?
Hot chocolate is great and all but I decided this bone broth version was the perfect one to make in the Mexican style. Mexican hot chocolate is the same rich, flavorful hot chocolate but usually made with cacao, sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes spices like nutmeg or chili.
Ingredients Needed to Make Bone Broth Mexican Hot Chocolate
To make this you’ll need:
- bone broth (chicken or beef – I’m using beef in this recipe)
- milk of your choice
- heavy whipping cream (makes this hot chocolate so creamy)
- cacao or cocoa powder
- maple syrup or honey to sweeten
- cinnamon powder
- cayenne powder
- sea salt (pink sea salt is great and very mineral rich)
- vanilla
Is Beef Broth the Same As Bone Broth?
The difference between bone broth and beef broth lies in their ingredients and cooking time. Bone broth is made by simmering bones (often with a little meat attached), water, and sometimes vegetables for an extended period—typically 12-24 hours—to extract nutrients like collagen, gelatin, and minerals from the bones. This results in a thick, nutrient-dense liquid.
In contrast, beef broth is usually made by simmering meat with bones for a shorter time, often just a few hours, and has a lighter texture and flavor with fewer nutrients from the bones.
How to Make
1 Add bone broth to a sauce pan and heat on medium.
2 Just before the bone broth starts to simmer add milk and heavy cream.
3 Add cocoa, cinnamon, cayenne, salt and vanilla.
4 Stir or whisk until blended smoothly.
5 Pour into your glass and top with homemade marshmallows or whip cream…or both 🙂
6 Sprinkle an additional pinch of the spices and sea salt over your drink and enjoy.
